On large sites, there is a temptation to rationalize the pages by creating subdomains to organize the content better.
Google and other search engines find this counterproductive and will provide higher page ranking to domains that are setup with first names first like www dot mydomain dot business dot com.
As your business expands or new categories make an appearance, you just need to add another page like www dot my domain dot business2 dot com.
This essentially provides the same access but it keeps a smile on the face of Google and the search engines.
To make the management and record keeping easier, most website owners assign Stock-Keeping-Units (SKUs) or some other form of product identification to their products and or services offered on their website. This form of product tracking is important in terms of managing product inventory, order fulfillment, and accounting but the Google search engines have no idea what SKU F22451 (for example) is. We users and the Google search engines all prefer to know that the item is a Sony 32-inch HD-ready LCD television (for example).
When someone uses the Google search engine to look for Sony 32-inch HD (for example), a list of search results on page 1 is presented usually with a ½ second or so.
If the product had been named www dot mydomain dot com / F22451, the chances are pretty slim of having a result returned page 1 of the search results.
Naming your product Sony 32-inch HD (for example) over F22451 provides you a far better chances of being served up to a potential user and therefore a far better chance of a potential sale.
Here is a tip for you to do early in your efforts to become an Internet Marketing professional.
When it is possible, rename the pages on your web site that provide information and content about the major products and or services on your site, to include the keywords that are likely to be actually used in an online search to find the major products and or services on your site. If your company uses stock-keeping units (SKUs), keep that information private and internal to your company’s management information systems, management reports, and management meetings. You want the world to see that you are selling a lot more bananas this month and not that item 2234 has increased in sales by 20 percent this month. Be sure to use keywords of your products and services, like you would use the names of your children, to be No 1 on Google.
